A Look at Kiva.org

Kiva.orgPeter Brinckerhoff mentioned the organization Kiva.org several times in his presentations. Here's a closer look.

The global micro-lending organization was started as a side project by computer programmer Matt Flannery and his wife Jessica in 2004.  The couple decided to "change the world, one loan at a time."

From Jessica's bio on the Kiva site: "Jessica first saw the power and beauty of microfinance while working in rural Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with Village Enterprise Fund and Project Baobab on impact evaluation and program development."

From Matt's bio: "As CEO, Matt has led Kiva.org's growth from a pilot project to an established online service with partnerships across the globe and millions in dollars loaned to low income entrepreneurs."

You can read more about the organization at Kiva.org . You can also read Matt's blog "The Kiva Chronicles ."

Taya F.'s Gravatar Though online powerhouse Amazon.com pulled in extra cash this year, overall retail sales on electronics, women's clothing and jewelry plummeted more than 20 percent from last holiday season. Looks like people are still willing to pay for convenience in a shrinking economy. Not only does Amazon.com save consumers from having to drive to the store and fight the crowds, it sells everything! So it makes sense that it’s doing so well. You can find gifts for everyone from your infant nephew to your great-grandma at that site. Amazon seems to be the only retailer that saw gains this year, though. Overall internet spending fell 1 percent in the United States. Regular retail sales on luxury items, such as jewelry, fell a whopping 35 percent. If that’s not a sign of the times, I don’t know what is.
