Jon Stewart's Education About Charities and Second Life

I couldn't resist including links to this exchange between popular Comedy Central star Jon Stewart and Susan Tenby, senior manager of TechSoup. The whole thing started after the Congressional panel on Second Life and virtual worlds. I file this under NON-PROFIT HUMOR.

April 15, 2008 Jon Stewart's Education About Charities and Second Life

Nonprofit fans of Second Life, an Internet game, are seeking to educate Jon Stewart about their online activism after the comedian made fun of one of them.

Susan Tenby, senior manager of TechSoup, a nonprofit technology group, appeared before a Congressional panel this month to discuss how Second Life and other virtual worlds can lead to real-world social improvement.

However, on The Daily Show, Mr. Stewart couldn’t help but be amused with the proceedings, noting that Ms. Tenby told the lawmakers the name of her online avatar: Glitteractica Cookie.

Bill would allow Alaskans to donate Permanent Fund dividend to charity

from The Associated Press

JUNEAU - Alaskans could donate a portion, or all, of their Permanent Fund Dividend to certain community, educational or charitable organizations under a bill that has passed the House and Senate.
House Bill 166, by Haines Republican Bill Thomas would place a checkoff box on the PFD application.

Each campus of the University of Alaska would be eligible as well as organizations that offer programs that serve youth, the elderly and low income or cover arts, health care, recycling, public broadcasting, libraries and zoos, among others. Political groups would not be eligible.

The Rasmuson Foundation, the state's largest charitable foundation, has pledged to fully fund the administrative costs of the program for its first three years. The bill now goes to Gov. Sarah Palin.

Sabbaticals as a Career Fix

Sabbaticals continue to be fodder for the media as more and more executives are taking them and experts are talking about them. Here's a piece in the Wall Street Journal that is making the syndication rounds.

How One Executive Used a Sabbatical to Fix His Career

One morning in 2005, Daniel H. Marcus awoke in a pitch-black hotel room. The executive-pay consultant knew he needed to see a corporate client, his third in three days in three far-flung cities. But for several minutes, he didn't know where he was or who awaited him.

"That doesn't bode well for my work," Mr. Marcus thought to himself. His memory lapse proved a blessing in disguise. With constant travel and 60-hour weeks pushing him close to burnout, the veteran partner at Mercer, a major human-resource consultant, decided he needed a sabbatical.

TechSoup's Disaster Planning and Recovery Toolkit

A major theme at the Leadership Summit was how to handle a crisis or disaster. TechSoup has developed a Disaster Planning and Recovery Toolkit for nonprofit organizations.

Taking a Sabbatical

Escape 101 I saw an article about sabbaticals in the newspaper the other day, and it mentioned this book: Escape 101: The Four Secrets to Taking a Sabbatical or Career Break Without Losing Your Money or Your Mind. Looks like an interesting read.

Learn more about the Rasmuson Foundation Sabbatical Program. From the Rasmuson site:

"The Rasmuson Foundation Sabbatical Program is designed to provide time away from the job for nonprofit leaders to engage in activities for personal renewal or professional growth. The Foundation believes that nonprofit CEOs/executive directors better serve their organization when they have extended opportunities to reflect on their work, gain insight into what they want to accomplish in their careers, learn better ways to run their agencies, and renew their personal energy."

A Look at Kiva.org

Kiva.orgPeter Brinckerhoff mentioned the organization Kiva.org several times in his presentations. Here's a closer look.

The global micro-lending organization was started as a side project by computer programmer Matt Flannery and his wife Jessica in 2004.  The couple decided to "change the world, one loan at a time."

From Jessica's bio on the Kiva site: "Jessica first saw the power and beauty of microfinance while working in rural Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with Village Enterprise Fund and Project Baobab on impact evaluation and program development."

From Matt's bio: "As CEO, Matt has led Kiva.org's growth from a pilot project to an established online service with partnerships across the globe and millions in dollars loaned to low income entrepreneurs."

This article in ADN today struck me as touching on some of the issues brought up by Peter Brinkerhoff at the Leadership Summit. 

When Liz Posey, Jonathan Teeters, Kokayi and Toccarra Nosakhere took their seats in a small Midtown boardroom on a recent snowy afternoon, it wasn't to talk corporate strategy, it was to plot a revolution.
