As we looked at the Alaskan landscape, we understood that Alaska has more nonprofits, per capita, than any other state in the union. We see Denali (Mount McKinley), as a metaphor for the nonprofit sector and Mt. Foraker as The Foraker Group, standing beside Alaska's nonprofit sector.
As we further researched the name, we learned that Mount Foraker, the somewhat less famous neighbor to Denali, was named for a 19th century United States Senator from Ohio. Senator Foraker tried to ensure that African Americans serving their country in the military had the same rights and privileges as their Caucasian counterparts. He tried to honor them and improve their lives. Regrettably, he was removed from office before he could achieve his goal.
Senator Foraker lost his initial battle, but eventually he was immortalized for his courage and effort in a stately Alaska mountain peak. Our intent is that together, Alaskan nonprofit staff, board and volunteers will work with The Foraker Group to honor and improve the lives of all Alaskans by striving for effective, strategic and sustainable organizations statewide.
