Experienced Development professionals are often aware of the need to establish a planned giving program as an essential component of a comprehensive fund development plan, but are either intimidated by planned giving or can't figure out how to make the time and gain the support within the organization to begin. The mentoring program will demystify planned giving by introducing the essential vocabulary and methodology necessary to establish a planned giving program; by providing basic templates for designing a planned giving program; and by providing mentees the essential support needed within the organization in order to successfully launch and sustain a planned giving program.
In this program, mentees will learn:
- The importance of ensuring Board and CEO support before beginning a planned giving program.
- The necessity of beginning with the basics by focusing on bequests, beneficiary designations, and gifts of appreciated stock.
- The elements of other planned giving vehicles, including Charitable Remainder Trusts, Charitable Lead Trusts, and Charitable Gift Annuities.
- A suggested timeline for marketing a planned giving program to donors.
The Mentoring Package will be offered in six month blocks. The package includes:
- Six two-hour sessions on the basics of planned giving.
- One-on-one mentoring sessions for 1 hour once a month.
- Up to 1 hour of phone contact per month (initiated by mentee).
- Interviews with board and staff
- Presentations/Training to board and staff as needed on: planned giving, endowment, estates and wills, trusts, gift annuities
- Assistance in creating planned giving/endowment sub-committee
- Development of organization gift policies, investment policies, as well as documents necessary to effectuate gifts
- Meet with and/or make presentations to donors, perspective donors and others as requested and draft any necessary documents related to those meetings
- Assistance in the development of a planned giving plan for integration into the organizations strategic and fund development plans.
- Act as 'on call' technical support for the executive director, development staff and board in communicating and closing planned gifts
