Leadership Development

Leadership is not about your title, it's about how you show up.

Leadership Consultation

Sometimes we just need a quick way to access a trusted advisor. Executive consultation is just the place.

As a leader, everything you do affects the way people regard you and your organization. Leadership isn’t about managing. It’s about setting an agenda and holding everyone accountable for achieving it. Great leaders inspire a shared vision. They understand what motivates people, and they master the art of delegation. If you need a sounding board to talk through a challenge or explore an idea, our door is open.

We believe that every leader needs a safe space to get grounded, to think out loud, and to reflect. When you need support, our team is here for you.

Mentoring and Coaching

Coaches and mentors can support you in finding creative ways to deal with everyday challenges and the ongoing complexity of leading a nonprofit.

We believe that successful leaders are supported leaders. We offer two kinds of ongoing support: mentoring and coaching. A mentor is someone who is called upon for their experience and guidance. While you might turn to a mentor for advice or to learn best practices, coaches are positioned to guide and support you to lead through complex challenges. Both mentors and coaches can help you to:

  • Increase your confidence on the job
  • Develop new leadership skills
  • Find greater job satisfaction
  • Improve your ability to achieve goals
  • Learn about useful resources to help you lead
  • Increase your certainty in decision making
  • Discover new techniques for managing the many aspects of your job

Both programs are offered through distance delivery – allowing for flexibility, statewide accessibility, and affordability.

Interim Executive Directors

Does your organization need temporary executive leadership during a time of change? We can provide you with an interim executive to help navigate to the next stage of executive transition.

Our interim executive pool consists of highly qualified and seasoned professionals who have led nonprofit organizations for many years. Our interims can help the board navigate stability after a crisis, give the board breathing room before taking the next step, or hold the mission steady during a time of change.

After having an extensive conversation with the board, we can place someone with your organization, either full or part-time. Contractually this relationship is between Foraker and the organization saving the organization from having to hire a temporary staff member.

Interim engagements typically are six months or less during which time the board must be actively engaged in transitioning to the next executive leader.

This limited service is available to Foraker Partners. We look forward to exploring if we have the right person to meet your interim needs.

Executive Transition

A smooth transition from one executive director to another will keep your organization focused on mission. By taking a realistic and thoughtful approach, your organization can create a process for a healthy leadership change.

Executive transition is an umbrella term for the comprehensive approach to searching, placing, engaging, and supporting a new CEO. It can also include an interim director or an opportunity to explore collaboration. Succession planning is one component that weaves throughout all the steps of transition.

Executive transition can start with the board exploring the organization’s strategic direction and end with a graceful exit of one CEO and entry of a new one. None of this will happen by accident, and each step from writing a succession plan to bringing on a new person requires a thoughtful process. Of course, sometimes this transition occurs for unexpected reasons, but even then, the goal is to respond with a well-planned process.

Many factors affect an executive transition. The board must take the lead in deciding if it is time to explore collaborative options or to find a new executive and help that person transition into the organization. Our role can be as mentor, partner, and guide. We do not make key decisions, but rather offer structure and support from start to finish.

You can choose to engage with us for some or all of our executive transition services. Our objective is to ensure your organization is well positioned to achieve its goals.

Fees can be determined before commitment, and may be set either by the hour or through a scope of work when multiple services are requested.

Rasmuson Foundation Sabbatical

Are you a long-time executive director or tribal leader? Would you love some time to rest and reflect on your future? The Rasmuson Foundation Sabbatical program is a special opportunity designed to help you do just that.

Rasmuson Foundation created this program to provide executives time away from the office for rest, personal renewal, and professional growth. Executives serving Alaska tribal organizations and nonprofits as a CEO, president, executive director, or tribal administrator are eligible to apply.

Many participants credit their sabbatical with preventing professional and emotional burn-out. They spend time reconnecting with family, traveling, and pursuing personal interests. Organizations also benefit as boards and staff members grow while their leader is gone.

The sabbatical application requires a written plan for how the organization will be managed in the leader’s absence and a letter from the organization’s board endorsing their executive’s decision to apply. Personal interviews with finalists play a major role in the decision process.

Guidelines and application materials are available at the Rasmuson Foundation website, or contact us and we can help guide you.

Once you are selected for a sabbatical by the Rasmuson Foundation, the Foraker team supports both you and those who are “stepping in and stepping up” during your time away. Foraker is honored to be a partner with the Foundation and with the Alaska organizations and tribes that are enriched by this program.
