Job Description

Position Profile

Executive Director | Singletrack Advocates | Anchorage, Alaska

The Position: Executive Director

Singletrack Advocates seeks an energetic and flexible leader with a passion for mountain biking and singletrack trails to serve as its first executive director. The ideal candidate will have strong community relationship-building skills, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work proactively and independently. STA’s new executive director will lead the organization into its next stage of development by building strong internal systems, establishing seasonal maintenance crews, and driving diversified fundraising strategies to strengthen STA’s long-term financial sustainability.

The Organization

Singletrack Advocates (STA) is a group of mountain bikers and recreationalists working with the community to preserve, maintain and create singletrack trails in Anchorage, Alaska. Since 2004, they have built over 40 miles of singletrack at Kincaid Park, Hillside Park, and Chugach State Park. Municipal funding, community donations, state grants, and other earned revenue support STA’s annual operating budget of $230,000. A dedicated board of 11 directors serve to support trail operations, and more than 500 members participate through trail maintenance events, group rides, and yearly donations to STA’s efforts.

Services and Programs

STA’s Services and Programs include:

  • Trail Preservation: Advocacy and partnerships to maintain access to existing trails.
  • Trail Maintenance: Annual maintenance plans, volunteer workdays, and professional crews to keep trails safe and enjoyable.
  • Trail Creation: Strategic planning and execution of new trail projects in collaboration with land managers and contractors.
  • Community Engagement: Outreach through social media, events, regular newsletters, responding to questions and requests for comments from the public, and fundraising to build support for STA’s mission.

Strategic Priorities

STA is looking to position as a regional leader advocating for mountain biking access and trail development including the successful establishment of a trail maintenance program, while collaborating with other trail organizations to promote mountain biking statewide.   The executive director will work toward those aspirations by focusing on the following short-term goals and partnering with the board to assess and revise the plan as needed to reflect progress and ensure relevance.

Short-Term Priorities (12–18 Months)

  • Develop a trail maintenance program, including hiring and managing a seasonal Pro Crew with mechanized equipment.
  • Develop and streamline administrative tasks.
  • Expand Community Relationships: Deepen partnerships with land managers, volunteers, and user groups.
  • Evaluate Impact: Develop metrics and reporting systems to measure trail maintenance and community engagement outcomes.
  • Grow STA’s Financial Engine: Diversify revenue streams and secure sustainable funding. Identify grant sources and apply for them.

The Leadership Opportunity

Singletrack Advocates is stepping into an exciting new chapter and the organization’s first Executive Director will play a major role in shaping the future of STA. This is a rare opportunity for a mission-oriented leader to guide a well-supported and community focused nonprofit into its next phase of growth and development.

The Executive Director will enter at an important moment as STA moves from a volunteer-led model of leadership into a more structured organization with a focus on long-term stability. This leader will build new systems, expand staff/trail crew capacity, and nurture existing partnerships to carry STA forward into the future.

With responsibilities in both community-facing leadership and long-term organizational strategy, the Executive Director will have a major and direct influence on the quality and sustainability of the singletrack trails enjoyed by thousands across Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska.
