Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:  Responsible for the overall leadership, strategy, and performance of the organization’s finance and shared services functions, including Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technology. As the organization’s lead financial officer, this role provides strategic financial leadership, oversees operational excellence, and partners with the Executive Team and Board to support organizational growth, sustainability, and mission impact. This position balances high-level strategy with hands-on leadership, ensuring strong financial stewardship, compliance, and continuous improvement across all functions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Executive Leadership & Strategy

  1. Serve as a key member of the Leadership Team, contributing to organization-wide strategy and decision-making and partnering directly with the Board and Executive Team
  2. Provide financial insight and recommendations to support strategic planning and long-term sustainability
  3. Partner with the CEO and executive leadership on organizational priorities, growth initiatives, and operational effectiveness
  4. Present financial and operational updates to senior leadership and the Board of Directors


Financial Leadership & Stewardship

  1. Provide oversight for all financial operations, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial controls
  2. Ensure timely, accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit requirements
  3. Oversee development of organizational budgets and long-range financial plans
  4. Ensure effective cash flow management, liquidity planning, and financial risk mitigation
  5. Guide audit processes and maintain strong relationships with external auditors

Shared Services Leadership (HR, IT, Finance, Accounting)

  1. Provide oversight of shared service functions, including:
    1. Accounting (Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, etc.)
    2. Finance/Financial Planning  and Analysis (FP&A) (FP&A Manager, Analysts )
    3. Human Resources (HR Senior, HR Generalist, Payroll roles)
    4. Information Technology
  2. Ensure alignment, efficiency, and service excellence across all functions
  3. Foster cross-functional collaboration and integrated service delivery


Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning

  1. Oversee enterprise-wide budgeting and forecasting processes
  2. Ensure accurate and actionable financial analysis to support decision-making
  3. Monitor financial performance and key metrics across programs and departments
  4. Guide development of cost allocation methodologies, including indirect cost rates


Contracts, Negotiations & Risk Management

  1. Lead or support negotiations related to contracts, funding agreements, and vendor partnerships
  2. Provide financial oversight and input on major contracts and strategic initiatives
  3. Oversee insurance coverage, risk management strategies, and organizational protections
  4. Ensure compliance with grant, regulatory, and contractual requirements


Investments & Capital Planning

  1. Oversee organizational investments and financial assets
  2. Partner with leadership on capital planning, funding strategies, and long-term financial sustainability
  3. Evaluate financial implications of new programs, partnerships, and initiatives


Operational Excellence & Special Projects

  1. Lead strategic initiatives and cross-functional projects to improve organizational effectiveness
  2. Identify opportunities to modernize systems, processes, and reporting capabilities
  3. Drive continuous improvement across finance and shared services functions


Leadership & Team Development

  1. Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of finance and shared services professionals
  2. Build a high-performing, collaborative, and accountable leadership culture
  3. Establish clear goals, priorities, and performance expectations across teams
  4. Support succession planning and leadership development


POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time, in-person preferred, position based in Anchorage, AK. Remote work possible with Executive approval. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or hours vary with location. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

TRAVEL:
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprints.
  3. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  4. 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in finance and/or operations
  5. Demonstrated experience in financial strategy, planning, and organizational leadership
  6. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  7. Experience leading multi-functional teams (finance, HR, IT, or shared services)
  8. Proven ability to partner with executive leadership and influence strategic decisions
  9. Experience with financial reporting, reconciliations, and month-end close
  10. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  11. Responsible work ethic with reliable attendance.
  12. Employees are expected to remain alert, attentive, and fully engaged in their responsibilities during all working hours.  Sleeping while on duty is strictly prohibited.
  13. Proven ability and willingness to be self-directed in problem solving and decision-making and perform basic assignments with little or no direct supervision while also working effectively as a team member.
  14. Demonstrated intermediate level of computer skills necessary to use and create documents and reports, spreadsheets, workshop materials and slide presentations, and to enter data into intricate database programs and proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook.
  15. Must keep all matters concerning participants in strictest confidence as required by HIPAA privacy and the 42 CFR, Part II confidentiality regulations. 
  16. Must be able to provide own transportation to meet work schedule requirements.


PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. CPA, MBA, or other advanced degree or certification
  2. Experience in nonprofit, government, or grant-funded organizations
  3. Experience managing complex, multi-program or multi-entity organizations
  4. Familiarity with rural, remote, or geographically dispersed operations
