At the Alaska Institute for Justice (AIJ), we are committed to protecting the human rights of all Alaskans. AIJ is an award-winning program with dedicated professionals that provide statewide legal services to immigrants, language access services and public policy work focused on climate justice issues affecting Alaska Native communities. AIJ has seventeen staff who speak English, Spanish, Korean, German, French, Yup'ik, & Russian. As an agency we uphold certain basic values. AIJ's three programs protect, defend, and advance the rights of some of Alaska's most underserved communities including: 1) Immigration Justice Project 2) Language Interpreter Center; and 3) Climate Justice Program.

Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS

Personal: The individual for this position must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, self-confidence and be able to advocate on behalf of clients with compassion. The person must be dependable, be able to work with a team of co-workers in stressful situations and to work with people from diverse cultures whose first language is not English. The individual must also be committed to providing legal representation to indigent individuals and those normally excluded from the justice system.

Education/Experience: J.D. degree required and licensed to practice law in Alaska or be eligible for a waiver. Excellent oral and written communication skills and work experience with culturally diverse clients required. Bilingual required and minimum of two years legal experience representing immigrants in immigration matters.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide legal representation of clients in proceedings before the Department of Homeland Security, the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Includes appearances at hearings, preparation of witnesses, legal research, and the preparation of briefs and other pleadings.
  • Provide direct legal services for underserved immigrants.
  • Work with paralegals and volunteers when they are assisting in your client- related work. Includes oversight of case management, telephone assistance and preparation of documents.
  • Meet deadlines imposed by the Executive Office of Immigration Review and the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Provide telephone consultations to rural immigrant and limited English proficient survivors and service providers on immigration issues.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Maintain case statistics for reports to funders including the Office on Violence Against Women.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned
