Position Overview:
The Outreach & Programs Manager supports Trailside Discovery Camp’s community outreach, camper and staff recruitment, curriculum organization, and year-round program delivery.

This role helps connect Trailside with families, schools, community partners, prospective campers, and seasonal staff. The position includes outreach through tabling, presentations, community events, website and social media support, and recruitment activities. The Outreach & Programs Manager also helps organize and maintain Trailside’s program curriculum, making updates as needed while prioritizing delivery, consistency, and accessibility over new curriculum writing.

This position reports directly to the Camp Director and works closely with the Camp Manager & Operations Administrator and summer leadership team to support high-quality, safe, and community-centered programming.

Organizational Overview:

The Alaska Center Education Fund envisions a thriving, just, and sustainable Alaska for future generations. We engage and empower Alaskans of all ages to support clean air and water, a strong and resilient democracy, and a fair and equitable transition from an extractive economy to a regenerative economy.

Trailside Discovery Camp is an environmental education program providing outdoor education opportunities to local Alaskans. Our primary focus is on 12-week summer camps currently held at three locations in Anchorage and one in Eagle River/Chugiak. Trailside also offers winter and spring programs and may expand through future out-of-school-time partnerships.

  • Assist with day-to-day program implementation, including scheduling, preparation, communication, and field-based support.
  • Directly support youth programming in the field as needed.
  • Help ensure programs are delivered safely, consistently, and in alignment with Trailside’s goals and youth development practices.
  • Support communication between program staff, families, partners, and camp leadership.

Outreach & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with schools, families, community organizations, staff alumni, and other partners.
  • Represent Trailside at community events, school events, job fairs, tabling opportunities, presentations, and recruitment activities.
  • Support camper recruitment through outreach, community communication, tabling, presentations, and partner engagement.
  • Support seasonal staff recruitment by attending hiring fairs, outreach events, and other recruitment opportunities.
  • Work with Communications staff to help keep Trailside website content, social media information, and promotional materials accurate and up to date.
  • Collaborate on storytelling, promotional content, and community communication efforts.
  • Support enrollment growth, including scholarship outreach and access-based participation.
  • Maintain communication with families, alumni, prospective staff, and community partners as part of outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Curriculum, Training & Program Quality
  • Organize, maintain, and update Trailside curriculum materials as needed, with a focus on usability for staff training and program delivery.
  • Support curriculum updates that reflect environmental education, place-based learning, and community needs.
  • Assist with seasonal staff training related to curriculum, program expectations, outdoor education practices, and youth engagement.
  • Support site leads and program staff with consistent implementation of curriculum and program systems across locations.
  • Gather feedback from youth, families, and staff to support program quality, safety, and improvement.
  • Help identify program needs, safety concerns, curriculum updates, and support needs that should be elevated to the Camp Director.

Qualifications, Skills & Working Conditions

Skills

  • Strong communication, organization, and follow-through skills.
  • Comfortable engaging with the community, including families, schools, partner organizations, prospective campers, and seasonal staff.
