The Bright Lights Book Project, a Palmer-based nonprofit Our mission is to expand literacy through access to books and programs to appreciative readers of all ages while visualizing the power of literacy to change lives. We currently stock over 50 bookcases with free books that are located in area businesses, government buildings, and Palmer and Wasilla schools. Last year we distributed over 70,000 books. We also ship books to villages off the road system and provide literacy related activities for children and seniors. As far as we can tell, no other organization in the country is providing free books to their community to the extent that we do.

Job Description

The Bright Lights Book Project, a Palmer-based nonprofit, needs a book loving, hard working person to help us meet our mission: To expand literacy through access to books and programs to appreciative readers of all ages while visualizing the power of literacy to change lives.

Assist the BLBP Executive Director with various functions necessary to meet the mission of the organization. Such duties will primarily include the following:

·       Sort, clean, stamp, and shelve books.

·       Organize books for events.

·       Maintain the organization’s workspace and prepare the space for events and other functions.

·       Prepare books for shipping to villages.

·       Help director contact villages interested in books.

·       Greet and interact with the public as needed.

·       Determine with the BLBP Executive Director the need for volunteers and recruit as necessary.

·       Supervise and work alongside volunteers as needed.

·       Train volunteers as needed.

·       Maintain a database of current and future BLBP volunteers.

·       Maintain volunteer calendar.

·       Use the organization’s vehicle to deliver books to community bookcases when needed.

·       Other duties as needed determined by the Executive Director.

This position is part-time, four hours per day five days per week from 1pm to 5pm – days can be Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday. $20-$24 per hour.

Note: This position requires the ability to lift boxes of books up to 40 lbs.
