Chief Executive Officer

Iditarod Trail Committee | Alaska

The Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC) seeks a visionary and entrepreneurial Chief Executive Officer to lead "The Last Great Race" into its next chapter. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO serves as the organization's chief executive, responsible for strategic leadership, financial sustainability, stakeholder engagement, operational excellence, and long-term growth that supports the mission of the organization.

The Iditarod is far more than an annual race. It is a year-round nonprofit organization operating at the intersection of sport, tourism, sponsorship, community engagement, media, education, retail, fundraising and animal welfare. The organization coordinates complex operations across remote Alaska while bringing together mushers, veterinarians, volunteers, sponsors, donors, Alaska Native and rural communities, government agencies, media partners, and fans from around the world.

Compensation

Starting salary is anticipated to be $160,000; however, the Iditarod Trail Committee recognizes exceptional experience and qualifications and may offer a higher starting salary for candidates whose background closely aligns with the organization's needs and strategic priorities.

The successful candidate will:

• Have a strong connection to Alaska. The ideal candidate will possess a meaningful understanding of Alaska's diverse communities, cultures, geography, and way of life, along with the ability to build trusted relationships with stakeholders across the state.
• Lead the strategic direction and long-term sustainability of the organization.
• Serve as the primary ambassador for the Iditarod mission, culture and brand. 
• Expand and diversify revenue through sponsorships, partnerships, philanthropy, events, media, licensing, and emerging business opportunities.
• Build trusted relationships with sponsors, donors, mushers, volunteers, communities, and public stakeholders.
• Guide a complex organization through opportunities and challenges with integrity, transparency, empathy and sound governance.
• Champion innovation while honoring the history and legacy of one of Alaska's most treasured institutions.
• Support and advance initiatives related to education, health, canine care, community engagement, and race operations.
   

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring:

• An appreciation for and deep understanding of Alaska's unique culture, communities, and operating environment.
• Senior executive leadership experience in a nonprofit, business, association, or similarly complex organization.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising, sponsorship development, business development, and/or revenue generation.
• Experience overseeing organizational strategy, financial management, governance, and risk management.
• Exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial leadership capabilities.
• Experience leading through change, growth, and complex organizational challenges.
• A bachelor's degree is preferred; equivalent combinations of education, executive leadership experience, and demonstrated organizational impact will be considered.
