Position: Youth Tobacco Coalition Coordinator

Reports To: NAMI Juneau Program Manager

Location: In-Person in Juneau, AK

Travel: Up to four weeks per year

Status: Full-time 

Pay: $33/hr

Job Scope

The Youth Tobacco Coalition Coordinator is responsible for leading our youth tobacco and nicotine cessation activities through a mental health and public health lens. This position will convene a coalition of people who care about this topic in Juneau to do the following:

Educate youth, guardians, and the general public about the link between mental illness symptoms and tobacco/nicotine use

Educate youth, guardians, and the general public about resources to quit using tobacco/nicotine

Promote policies and practices that reduce exposure to tobacco/nicotine use, including secondhand smoke

This is a new position for NAMI Juneau and is funded by a 3-year grant from the State of Alaska.

Primary Tasks and Areas of Responsibility 

Build a community coalition to focus on youth tobacco cessation

• Recruit coalition members
• Plan and host regular meetings
• Engage coalition members to inform all coalition work

Engage public and private entities through education on the importance of smoke- and tobacco-free policies in indoor settings

• Research best practices related to smoke-free environments for different settings where youth exist
• Share best practices with various entities such as Juneau School District, City & Borough of Juneau, University of Alaska Southeast, and advocate for their implementation

Public Awareness and Education Campaign 

• Facilitate a variety of youth presentations and groups that discuss mental illness symptoms and healthy responses to those symptoms, including in schools and at Tlingit & Haida youth events.
• Attend public events to educate the public about the link between mental illness symptoms and tobacco use and the options for tobacco cessation programs

 

Other

Providing 1-on-1 mental health consults for people seeking help navigating Juneau’s mental health services, including responding to phone calls and walk-ins at the NAMI Juneau office

Participate in community meetings

Other duties as assigned

 

The ideal candidate has the following skills, traits, and qualifications:

A commitment to working with and on behalf of those who live with mental illness and their loved ones.

Personal experience with tobacco/nicotine cessation, mental illness, substance use, and/or suicide.

Experience and interest in working directly with youth and guardians.

Experience working with local Indigenous people and tribal organizations.

Ability to host a coalition and synthesize many ideas and perspectives into a work plan.

Commitment to social justice, equity, and service to others.

Proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), Zoom, Google Drive, and email applications.

Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, including technical writing skills.

Ability to research best practices about organizational policies and convey them.

Ability to manage a programmatic budget.

Knowledge of social service organizations in Juneau.

Cannot have a criminal history that precludes the candidate from being present in schools and at youth events.

Because this position is responsible for promoting tobacco and nicotine cessation, we prefer applicants to currently be tobacco- and nicotine-free. 

 

Workplace Information

NAMI Juneau’s office is in the Teal Street Center (8711 Teal Street). 

This position regularly works nights and weekends.

Our office is dog-friendly and occasionally hosts employees’ young children.  

This position requires reliable transportation.

Travel in Southeast is often via ferry and floatplane. 

The employee will need to be able to sit and stand in a classroom for up to 10 hours a day.

The employee will need to carry objects weighing up to 35 pounds safely.
