Job Description

About Anchorage Project Access

Anchorage Project Access (APA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting low-income, uninsured Alaskans with essential healthcare services. Since 2005, APA has worked to remove barriers to care by coordinating donated specialty medical, dental, and mental health counseling services through a generous network of volunteer healthcare providers and community partners.

Our team works closely with patients, healthcare providers, and community organizations to ensure individuals who might otherwise go without care can access the services they need. Through compassionate patient support, care coordination, and strong community partnerships, we are committed to restoring health and hope to Alaskans in need.

Position Summary

The Medical Care Coordinator plays a critical role in helping low-income, uninsured Alaskans access donated specialty healthcare services through Anchorage Project Access (APA). Working in close collaboration with the Medical Program Manager, this position supports the daily operations of APA's Medical Program by coordinating donated medical services provided through its network of volunteer healthcare providers and community partners.

This position is responsible for processing specialty care referrals, reviewing referral documentation to ensure program eligibility and medical appropriateness, coordinating appointments and procedures, and supporting patients throughout the care coordination process. The Medical Care Coordinator serves as a key liaison between referring primary care clinics, specialty care providers donating services, ancillary service providers, and patients.

Through strong communication, organization, and patient navigation, this role helps ensure patients receive timely access to needed specialty care. The Medical Care Coordinator assists in managing referral volumes, maintaining positive relationships with volunteer providers, and ensuring efficient coordination of donated healthcare services to meet the needs of APA's patients and community.

The Medical Care Coordinator primarily supports the Medical Program but will also be cross-trained to provide coverage and support in other program areas as needed.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple referrals and patient cases simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing documentation, maintaining records, and managing patient information.

  • Ability to review medical referral documentation, identify missing information, and determine appropriate next steps in accordance with program guidelines and established procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and geographic backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and database systems; experience with healthcare databases preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
