Supporting public policy that is beneficial to the nonprofit sector is a major focus for us – one we exercise as Alaska’s nonprofit association. Our involvement in the National Council of Nonprofits, a network of state associations of which Foraker is the largest member, has enhanced our ability to serve as “voice of the sector” and to successfully influence issues that affect the nonprofit sector locally, statewide, and nationally.
We engage in our public policy role in four key ways:
- Conducting research. We conduct our own research and collect research on the sector that specifically affects Alaska. You’ll find our latest research here.
- Using our voice. Each year, the Foraker Governance and Operations Boards adopt a public policy platform on issues that are important to the Alaska nonprofit sector. You can learn more about the criteria we use to select those issues here. Our 2017 public policy priorities are available here.
- Convening the sector. From time to time, Foraker will convene members of the sector to highlight an issue, raise awareness, and encourage collaboration on important issues. This process can be as large as our biennial Leadership Summit or as small as a roundtable discussion on a local issue. Watch our blog for announcements of public events and discussions.
- Providing resources. Through our membership in the National Council of Nonprofits, we are able to link you to information on public policy issues. Resources to help you with your public policy issues are available here.
