Spring has arrived in Point Hope! While it’s still 10 below outside, a little of the Bering Sea is opening and the first Bowhead Whales have arrived. The people in Point Hope are busy preparing for their spring whaling season.
While Alaskans in the Southeast may have the first signs of green popping out and those in South Central may have the slush of breakup to content with, the people on the North Slope are experiencing the excitement of their spring based on thousands of years of surviving in the arctic.
The Foraker Group is dedicated to serve all of Alaska. We have now provided support, on the ground in almost 150 communities, each with their unique culture and tradition. Since more and more Alaskan communities are embracing the technologies of the Twenty First Century, it’s good to remember that many of the first Alaskans, while also connected to today’s technologies, try to stay as connected to their roots as possible.
In Point Hope, a community that may be the longest inhabited spot in North America, where some of the smartest people I have ever met live, sixteen crews are preparing to get into their skin covered boats and harvest one of their most important subsistence foods.
The smidgen of insight today is to remind you of one of the factors of sustainability, Focus. Focus requires that you strictly adhere to who you are, because when organizations move away from that basic foundation, they can loose momentum. An organization’s founding principles are the energy that fuels momentum. In Point Hope, holding on to those principles have helped this community survive for over 2,500 years…..that we know about.
