The pressure of a new year only intensifies if you think you are supposed to do something new or better. It seems like the idea of a resolution is that it is imbued with hope and possibility but really, it can all feel a bit exhausting. Please don’t misunderstand me, I am all about improvement and advancement, but if the pressure to do new and shiny things is more about external forces and less about what is truly motivating you and your organization to do better, then I would caution you to think again. Yesterday, the National Council of Nonprofits (of which Foraker is a member) and its national partners filed a lawsuit to ensure that 42 million Americans (including over 60,000 Alaskans) and the nonprofits that support them can continue to count on SNAP.  Today, the federal court judge in Rhode Island issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) in the lawsuit brought by NCN and a broad coalition of other plaintiffs seeking to protect SNAP benefits! Under the TRO, the Trump Administration is required to distribute contingency funds to continue food assistance. The early imagining of Foraker took shape within a strategic plan at United Way of Anchorage, envisioning a suite of shared services for nonprofits and tribes. That vision grew into a deeply collaborative relationship with Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC)—and together, we have been innovating our way forward ever since. CITC created the original startup version of the IT and financial shared services that laid the foundation for Foraker. Through a partnership with the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the University of Alaska Anchorage Center for Economic Development, Alaska data on the pay gap is easier to ascertain than in other states. Today, we celebrate Elizabeth Peratrovich, a Tlingit woman who played a pivotal role in the fight for Alaska Native civil rights. Her advocacy helped pass Alaska’s first anti-discrimination law, which became the first of its kind in the United States.
